My mom is 96 and was diagnosed with the early stages of dementia. I have heard some people bragging about how well they did on a dementia test, as though it's an intelligence test.

They said they could repeat 5 items: "person, woman, man, camera, TV." A dementia test is to test cognitive functions, such as thinking, reasoning, and remembering. My mom and I are very visual, so we both tend to remember things we see. I am exploring the idea of seeing objects with words. I am mixing up the words with the different pictures to sort of trick the brain, maybe the way it might feel to have dementia.

I have always loved the look of a beautiful line. Most painters see and paint their subjects as shapes first. I tend to see in line first. I discovered that some of my favorite artists were also “line thinkers” (i.e. Egon Schiele, Toulouse Lautrec, and Alice Neel). They let their lines show through as part of their painting. For as long as I can remember, I have carried a pen with me so I could draw. I tend to like to draw and paint people and places. I enjoy the immediacy of plein air sketching and painting.
