I love to sit next to a tree and draw it. If you haven't done it before, I recommend it. I drew this tree at a botanical garden in Encinitas. There were flowers and flashy things to draw but I plopped down next to this beauty and just felt like she spoke to me. I felt so connected in that moment.

I have always loved the look of a beautiful line. Most painters see and paint their subjects as shapes first. I tend to see in line first. I discovered that some of my favorite artists were also “line thinkers” (i.e. Egon Schiele, Toulouse Lautrec, and Alice Neel). They let their lines show through as part of their painting. For as long as I can remember, I have carried a pen with me so I could draw. I tend to like to draw and paint people and places. I enjoy the immediacy of plein air sketching and painting.
